eThekwini Municipality Incentive Fuels Sustainability at AlcoNCP

2024/03/26

What once was a rum distillery along the Umgeni River has evolved into something extraordinary. The journey of AlcoNCP has been a beacon of innovation and excellence in the heart of our city! From its humble beginnings as a rum distillery on the banks of the Umgeni River 156 years ago in 1868, AlcoNCP has emerged as a global leader in producing top-quality neutral alcohol.

AlcoNCP proudly stands as one of three production plants under the esteemed Belgium-based Alcogroup, a major supplier of Bioethanol, biogenic CO2, and high-quality animal feed

Our commitment to sustainable energy extends far beyond borders, with AlcoNCP as the sole ISCC Certified ethanol plant in Africa, this distinction underscores our unwavering dedication to sustainable innovation. While we may not wield direct influence over European decisions, our steadfast focus on innovation and sustainability harmonises seamlessly with the mission of EPURE (European Renewable Ethanol Association).

As a key player in the Alcogroup, AlcoNCP specialises in the production, distribution, and trade of over 100 000 m³ of -ethanol worldwide, catering to diverse industries such as food, industrial, and pharmaceutical - markets. Their commitment to excellence has earned them international recognition and accolades, solidifying their position as a powerhouse in the industry.

Alcogroup’s latest milestone is a groundbreaking investment to enhance capacity and energy efficiency by transitioning to maize feedstock for alcohol production. This bold move not only underscores AlcoNCP’s commitment to sustainability but also sets a new standard for environmental responsibility in the sector.

Our partnership as the eThekwini municipality (Economic Development Unit) with AlcoNCP is through a property rate rebate as per the incentive policy, aimed at fostering sustainable growth. The Memorandum of Agreement, signed on December 28, 2022, offers rebates on property valued at R16,580,000, incentivising the company's expansion efforts and environmental initiatives.

This initiative marks a significant step towards reducing carbon footprints and promoting eco-friendly practices within our community. We commend AlcoNCP for their dedication to building a greener, more sustainable future and look forward to witnessing the positive impact of their efforts on our city and beyond.

The eThekwini Municipality Economic Development Unit continues to support and celebrate the success stories of businesses committed to making a difference.
